Sound and waves | Physics | Railway NTPC & group d | Wbp SI | Wb Constable | SSC

  • Sound is kind of energy.
  • Sound produced due to vibration.
  • Speed of sound in air 332  m /s
  • Speed of sound in water 1483 m /s
  • Speed of sound in iron 5130 m /s
  • Solid liquid and gaseous media are required for sound propagation.
  • Speed of sound is maximum in solid and minimum in gases.
  • Sound cannot travel through vacuum.
  • Sound passes from one place to another place is from of wave.
  • Sound waves travel different speed different medium.
  • Speed of sound remains unchanged by the increase or decrease of pressure.
  • Sound waves are longitudinal mechanical waves based on their frequency range.

SOUNDWAVE DIVIDED INTO THREE CATEGORIES

AUDIBLE WAVES

  • This sound wave frequency range between 20 Hz to 20000 Hz.

INFRASONIC WAVES

  • This sound waves having frequencies less than 20 Hz.

ULTRASONIC WAVES
  • This sound waves having frequencies greater than 20000 Hz.

  • Infrasonic sound and Ultrasonic sound we do not hear.

  • We don't hear if there is an explosion on Moon or another planet because there is no mass between the them and the earth.

  • Particles of the medium do not displace during the propagation of sound waves this is wave property of sound

  • The number of times a periodic motion vibrates full per second is called the Frequency.

Echo is reflection of sound, this is use to

  • Measure the depth of the Ocean,
  • Determine the height of an Aircraft,
  • Determine the speed of sound in the Air.
